A gross to net calculator by country is a set of salary tools, one per country, each built on that country's own income tax bands and social security contributions. Pick a country above and enter the gross salary in its currency.

Every country deducts something different: Germany splits social insurance into four funds, the United Kingdom takes National Insurance, and Canada adds pension and employment insurance premiums. The table below runs each calculator at a typical local salary.

How to Use the Country Calculator

Choose the country, type the gross salary in local currency, and switch between yearly and monthly pay. The result uses that country's 2026 rules for an employee with no special allowances. Open the country page for options such as tax class, region, children or church tax.

Net Salary by Country

Each row is the country's own calculator at an example salary, shown in its own currency. The example is a typical full-time salary for that country, so the rows show how much of a normal wage reaches the employee.

Comparing the net figures across currencies needs an exchange rate and an adjustment for prices; the share of tax and contributions compares directly.

What Countries Deduct From a Salary

Almost every payroll system takes two kinds of deduction:

  • Income tax, usually on progressive bands after a tax-free allowance or credit.
  • Social contributions for pensions, health care, unemployment and sometimes long-term care, often capped at a ceiling so the highest earners pay a smaller share.

Some countries add local or regional tax (Swiss cantons, Belgian municipalities, Canadian provinces), church tax, or a solidarity surcharge.

Thirteenth and Fourteenth Month Salaries

In several countries the yearly salary is paid in more than 12 instalments. Austria pays 14 salaries, with the extra two taxed at a lower rate, and many employers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain pay a holiday allowance or extra month. Compare jobs on the yearly figure, then divide by the number of payments.

Comparing Salaries Between Countries

A higher net salary is only better if it buys more. Before moving, convert the net pay at today's exchange rate and compare living costs: rent, health insurance, transport and childcare differ more than taxes do. For moves within the United States, the Cost of Living Calculator adjusts a salary for state price levels.

Tax Residence and Working Abroad

Most countries tax residents on their worldwide income and non-residents only on income earned there. Residence usually starts after 183 days in a year or when your home or family is there. Tax treaties stop the same salary being taxed twice, and social security agreements decide which country's contributions you pay. The country pages assume a resident employee.

A Quick Estimate for Any Country

For a country without its own page, use the combined-rate method: net = gross × (1 − total rate). If income tax and contributions take about 30% together, 4,000.00 gross leaves 2,800.00 net. The All Gross to Net Tools page has this quick calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the lowest tax on salaries?

Gulf states such as the United Arab Emirates charge no personal income tax on salaries; residents there pay only social contributions where they apply.

Are the figures in local currency?

Yes. Each country page calculates in its own currency with that country's 2026 rules.

Why are social contributions capped?

Many countries charge pension and health contributions only up to a ceiling salary, so the share falls for higher earners.

Do expats pay the same tax as locals?

Usually, once resident. Some countries offer special regimes for new arrivals, such as the Dutch 30% ruling; the country pages note them.

Is net salary the same as take-home pay?

Yes. Net salary is gross pay minus income tax and employee social contributions, the amount paid into your account.
