How Swedish Income Tax Is Built

Most employees in Sweden pay only municipal tax plus a few small fees; state tax starts high up the pay scale.

  1. The grundavdrag (basic allowance) comes off your income. It is largest for low and middle earners and SEK 17,400 for high earners.
  2. Municipal and regional tax applies to what is left, at a combined rate between about 29% and 36%.
  3. State tax of 20% applies to taxable income above the skiktgräns of SEK 643,000.
  4. Tax reductions then cut the bill: one equal to your general pension contribution, and the jobbskatteavdrag for people in work.

Jobbskatteavdrag in 2026

The earned income tax credit grew again on 1 January 2026. It is measured in price base amounts (prisbasbelopp, SEK 59,200 for 2026) and multiplied by your municipal rate, so a higher kommun rate gives a larger credit.

Work incomeCredit base before grundavdrag
up to SEK 53,872the whole income
SEK 53,872 to SEK 191,808SEK 53,872 plus 38.74% of income above it
SEK 191,808 to SEK 478,336SEK 107,329.60 plus 25.1% of income above SEK 191,808
over SEK 478,336SEK 179,198.40

The grundavdrag is subtracted from that base and the result is multiplied by the municipal rate. At the average rate the credit on a high salary is SEK 52,390.32 a year.

State Tax Threshold for 2026

The skiktgräns for 2026 is SEK 643,000 of taxable income. Add the lowest grundavdrag and the brytpunkt, the salary where state tax starts, is SEK 660,400 a year, about SEK 55,033.33 a month. On SEK 840,000 the state tax comes to SEK 35,920.

Worked Example on 43,000 Kronor a Month

  • Municipal tax before reductions: SEK 498,600 × 32.38% = SEK 161,446.68
  • General pension contribution: 7% = SEK 36,100, matched by a tax reduction of the same amount
  • Jobbskatteavdrag: SEK 52,390.32, so municipal tax after reductions is SEK 72,956.36
  • Burial fee SEK 1,321.29 and public service fee SEK 1,184; no state tax
  • Net pay: SEK 404,438.35 a year, SEK 33,703.20 a month

Burial Fee, Church Fee and Public Service Fee

  • Begravningsavgift: paid by everyone registered in Sweden, 0.265% on average in 2026.
  • Kyrkoavgift: only for members of the Church of Sweden or another registered faith community; enter your parish rate in the form.
  • Public service fee: 1% of taxable earned income, at most SEK 1,184 a year.

What Counts as Taxable Pay

Salary, overtime, bonuses, holiday pay and benefits such as a company car or free housing are taxed. A Christmas gift within Skatteverket's limit of SEK 600 and per diems at the official rates are tax free. Your employer's own social fees are paid on top of gross pay, so they never appear on your payslip.
