Annual Income Formulas
| Pay period | Annual income formula |
|---|---|
| Hourly | Rate × hours per week × 52 |
| Daily | Day rate × days per week × 52 |
| Weekly | Weekly pay × 52 |
| Biweekly | Paycheck × 26 |
| Semi-monthly | Paycheck × 24 |
| Monthly | Monthly pay × 12 |
Biweekly and semi-monthly are different: 26 paychecks against 24. A $2,000 paycheck is $52,000 a year biweekly and $48,000 semi-monthly.
Gross vs Net Annual Income
Gross annual income is total pay before taxes and deductions; net annual income is the pay left after them. Lenders and landlords ask for gross annual income. A budget uses net annual income.
Total annual income on a tax return adds interest, dividends, business profit, rental income and capital gains to wages. The AGI Calculator works from that total.
Annual Income With Overtime and Bonuses
Overtime, bonuses and commissions are part of gross annual income. Five overtime hours a week at 1.5 × $22 add $8,580 a year. The Overtime Calculator computes the weekly amount.
Annual Income From an Hourly Rate
Annual income from an hourly rate is the rate times 2,080 hours for a full-time job: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.
| Hourly rate | Annual income before tax | Annual income after tax |
|---|---|---|
| $15 | $31,200 | $27,249.20 |
| $18 | $37,440 | $32,263.04 |
| $20 | $41,600 | $35,605.60 |
| $22 | $45,760 | $38,948.16 |
| $25 | $52,000 | $43,962 |
| $30 | $62,400 | $52,318.40 |
| $35 | $72,800 | $60,044.80 |
| $40 | $83,200 | $67,361.20 |
After-tax figures: single filer, 2026 federal tax and FICA, a state with no income tax, no 401(k) or health deductions. Each $1 of hourly rate adds $2,080 of gross annual income at full time.
Annual Income After Taxes by State
Annual income after taxes changes with the state income tax rate, while the gross figure stays the same everywhere.
| State | $22 an hour, net / year | Taxes / year |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | $38,948.16 | $6,811.84 |
| Arizona | $37,804.16 | $7,955.84 |
| Pennsylvania | $37,543.33 | $8,216.67 |
| Illinois | $36,683.04 | $9,076.96 |
All four rows start from $45,760 of gross annual income. Local income taxes, such as city wage taxes, are not included.
Annual Income From Biweekly, Semi Monthly or Monthly Pay
Annual income from a paycheck is the check amount times the number of paydays in a year, and the same check gives 3 different yearly totals.
| Gross paycheck | Biweekly (26) | Semi-monthly (24) | Monthly (12) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | $39,000 | $36,000 | $18,000 |
| $2,000 | $52,000 | $48,000 | $24,000 |
| $2,500 | $65,000 | $60,000 | $30,000 |
| $3,500 | $91,000 | $84,000 | $42,000 |
| $4,500 | $117,000 | $108,000 | $54,000 |
Use the gross amount from the pay stub, not the deposit. A net deposit times 26 gives annual take-home pay, not annual income. Some calendar years hold 27 biweekly or 53 weekly paydays, which adds one extra check to that year.
Part Time Annual Income
Part time annual income is the hourly rate times the real weekly hours times the paid weeks, so fewer hours scale the total down in a straight line.
- 20 hours a week at $22: $22,880 a year, $20,451.68 after tax.
- 25 hours a week at $22: $28,600 a year, $25,160.10 after tax.
- 30 hours a week at $22: $34,320 a year, $29,756.12 after tax.
- 40 hours, 50 paid weeks: $44,000, when 2 weeks of time off are unpaid.
Set paid weeks below 52 for seasonal work, school-year jobs or unpaid leave.
Annual Household Income
Annual household income is the gross income of every earner in the household added together for the same year.
One partner earning $22 an hour ($45,760) and one earning $4,500 a month ($54,000) have $99,760 of household income. Filing jointly in a state with no income tax, the couple keeps about $84,517.16 after federal tax and FICA.
Forms that ask for household income can define it differently; some benefit programs add untaxed income or count only certain family members. Follow the definition printed on the form.
Annual Income on Loan and Rental Applications
Loan and rental applications ask for gross annual income, before taxes and payroll deductions, from every source that can be documented.
- Wages and salary: shown on pay stubs and Form W-2.
- Variable pay: overtime, bonuses, commission and tips, shown on pay stubs or past tax returns.
- Self-employment: net profit from Schedule C, not total sales.
- Other income: Social Security, pensions, alimony and rental income.
The Hourly to Salary Calculator converts an hourly wage for a form that asks for a yearly salary.
