What Percentage of Gross Pay You Take Home
Take-home percentage is net pay divided by gross pay. The rest is the effective tax rate.
Take-home % = Net pay ÷ Gross pay · Effective rate = 1 − Take-home %
For $65,000, single, in Texas:
- Federal income tax: $5,620 on $48,900 of taxable income after the $16,100 standard deduction.
- Social Security: $4,030 (6.2%). Medicare: $942.50 (1.45%).
- State tax: none in Texas.
- Net pay $54,407.50 ÷ $65,000 = 83.7% kept, 16.3% paid in tax.
Take Home Percentage by Salary in 2026
The share you keep falls as pay rises, because more of each dollar lands in higher brackets.
| Gross salary | Net, single | Kept, single | Federal bracket, single | Kept, married jointly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $26,285 | 87.6% | 12% | 92.3% |
| $50,000 | $42,355 | 84.7% | 12% | 88.8% |
| $65,000 | $54,407.50 | 83.7% | 12% | 87.1% |
| $85,000 | $68,627.50 | 80.7% | 22% | 85.5% |
| $120,000 | $93,250 | 77.7% | 22% | 84.0% |
| $200,000 | $148,927 | 74.5% | 24% | 79.7% |
All rows assume Texas, with no state income tax, and the standard deduction. At $200,000 a single filer keeps 74.5%; a married couple on $65,000 keeps 87.1%, because their brackets are twice as wide.
Effective Rate Versus Marginal Rate
The two rates answer different questions. The effective rate is the share of all pay that goes to tax; the marginal rate is the tax on the next dollar.
- At $65,000 single, the federal bracket is 12%, but federal income tax is only 8.6% of gross pay.
- Add FICA and the next $100 of pay loses 19.7% to tax, which the calculator shows as "Tax on the next $100 of pay".
- A raise never lowers take-home pay in dollars. Only the extra dollars pay the higher rate.
The Tax Bracket Calculator shows how taxable income fills each bracket.
Net Is What Percent of Gross
When you know both figures, divide net by gross. Choose "Net as a % of gross (two figures)".
A payslip with $4,200 gross and $3,150 net shows a take-home share of 75.00%, so 25.00% came off for tax and deductions. Compare that with the table above: a share well below the figure for your salary can point to large benefit deductions or extra withholding.
Gross to Net for Any Figure, Not Just Salary
Outside payroll, a gross figure less a percentage gives a net figure: net = gross × (1 − rate). This covers a gross to net cost, value or financial figure.
- Commission or platform fee: $2,500 gross sales less a 15% fee leaves 2,125.00 net.
- Back from net: to keep $2,125 after the same 15%, you need 2,500.00 gross. Dividing by 0.85 gets there; adding 15% to the net figure does not.
- Discounts and rebates: a list price less a trade discount works the same way.
- Sales tax inside a price: this is a different calculation, because the tax is added to the net figure. Use the Net to Gross Calculator for pay, and the VAT or GST pages for sales taxes.
State Tax and the Take Home Share
State income tax cuts the share directly. At $65,000 single:
| State | State tax | Net per year | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | $0 | $54,407.50 | 83.7% |
| Arizona (2.5%) | $1,625 | $52,782.50 | 81.2% |
| Pennsylvania (3.07%) | $1,995.50 | $52,412 | 80.6% |
| Illinois (4.95%) | $3,217.50 | $51,190 | 78.8% |
For a state with brackets, choose "Other state" and enter your average state rate.
The Same Share per Paycheck
With steady pay, the percentage is the same on every paycheck. $65,000 single in Texas keeps 83.7% whether paid monthly ($4,533.96 net of $5,416.67) or biweekly ($2,092.60 net of $2,500).
The share shifts within a year in two cases: Social Security stops once wages pass $184,500, and a bonus paid with flat 22% withholding changes the share on that one check.

- Figure modes are plain percentage arithmetic with no tax rules.
