Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks). After-tax figures use 2026 federal tax, FICA and the state rate.

A salary to hourly calculator is a pay converter that divides an annual salary by the hours worked in a year to find the equivalent hourly rate. A full-time year has 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

A $65,000 salary equals $31.25 an hour before tax and $26.16 an hour after 2026 federal tax and FICA for a single filer with no state income tax.

Salary to Hourly Formula

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Paid weeks per year)

The formula divides by paid weeks, not calendar weeks. Paid vacation and holidays stay in the 52 weeks because the salary pays them. Unpaid weeks come out of the divisor.

Longer weeks lower the real hourly rate. A $65,000 salary at 45 hours a week is $27.78 an hour, not $31.25. Salaried employees who are exempt under the FLSA receive no overtime pay for the extra hours.

$100,000$48.08$38.07$8,333.33
$150,000$72.12$54.71$12,500

The after-tax column uses a single filer in a state with no income tax at 40 hours a week. A quick estimate halves the salary and drops the thousands: $60,000 is about $30 an hour.

Salary vs Hourly Pay

Salary and hourly pay differ in overtime, pay stability and benefits.

  • Overtime: hourly workers earn 1.5 times their rate after 40 hours; exempt salaried workers earn the same salary at 40 or 55 hours.
  • Stability: a salary pays the same amount each period; hourly pay follows the hours scheduled.
  • Salary threshold: the FLSA exempts salaried employees from overtime only above a minimum salary and only for executive, administrative or professional duties.

The reverse conversion is the Hourly to Salary Calculator.

Salary to Hourly When You Work Longer Weeks

Every extra hour in the week lowers the real hourly rate of a fixed salary. Exempt employees are paid the same salary however long the week runs.

Hours a weekHourly rate on $65,000After tax per hour
40 hours$31.25$26.16
45 hours$27.78$23.25
50 hours$25$20.93
55 hours$22.73$19.02
60 hours$20.83$17.44

A salaried employee who is non-exempt under the FLSA is still owed overtime after 40 hours. The Overtime Calculator works out that pay.

Monthly and Biweekly Salary to Hourly

A monthly or biweekly salary is converted to hourly by turning it into a yearly salary first.

  • Monthly salary: multiply by 12, then divide by 2,080. $5,000 a month is $60,000 a year, or $28.85 an hour.
  • Biweekly salary: multiply by 26, then divide by 2,080. $2,500 every two weeks is $65,000 a year, or $31.25 an hour.
  • Semi-monthly salary: multiply by 24, then divide by 2,080. $2,500 twice a month is $60,000 a year, or $28.85 an hour.

Dividing a monthly salary by 160 hours overstates the hourly rate, because an average month has 173.33 working hours at 40 hours a week.

Salary to Hourly With Benefits

Benefits raise the true hourly value of a salary when their yearly cost to the employer is added before dividing.

Total hourly value = (Salary + yearly benefit value) ÷ hours worked

On a $65,000 salary, an employer health plan and 401(k) match worth $8,000 a year lift the hourly value from $31.25 to $35.10. Use the benefit figures from your offer letter or benefits statement; they vary widely by employer.

This total is the fair figure to compare against an hourly or contract job that pays no benefits.

Salary to Daily Rate

A daily rate from a salary is the annual salary divided by 260 working days: 5 days a week for 52 weeks.

A $65,000 salary is $250 a day. Payroll uses the daily rate for a partial first month, unpaid leave and a final paycheck. The Prorated Salary Calculator counts the exact workdays for those cases.

Part Time Salary to Hourly

A part-time salary is converted with the hours the job actually schedules, not 40. Dividing a part-time salary by 2,080 understates the hourly rate.

Salary and scheduleHourly rateHourly at 40 hours (wrong)
$30,000 at 25 hours a week$23.08$14.42
$36,000 at 30 hours a week$23.08$17.31
$24,000 at 20 hours a week$23.08$11.54
$40,000 at 32 hours a week$24.04$19.23

Set "Hours / week" in the calculator to the contract hours. A 4-day, 32-hour week at full pay, such as the last row, earns the same hourly rate as a $50,000 salary at 40 hours.

How Unpaid Weeks Change the Hourly Rate

Unpaid weeks raise the hourly rate a salary is worth, because the same pay covers fewer hours. Teachers and school staff paid over a 10-month year are the common case.

A $52,000 salary over 52 paid weeks is $25 an hour. The same salary over 42 working weeks is $30.95 an hour. Enter the weeks you are paid to work in "Paid weeks / year".
