Portugal 2026: IRS bands from 12.5% to 48% on gross pay less the specific deduction (€4,587.09, or Social Security when higher), the €250 general family expense deduction assumed in full, Segurança Social 11%. Single taxpayer, annual tax (not monthly withholding), 14 payments with the holiday and Christmas subsidies. Mínimo de existência not applied, so low pay may owe less.

This gross to net calculator Portugal shows the salário líquido left from a salário bruto after IRS income tax and the 11% Segurança Social contribution. It uses the 2026 IRS table from the Orçamento do Estado, with every band limit raised and the second to fifth rates cut by 0.3 points.

A single employee on €25,000 a year keeps €19,057.02. Portuguese salaries are paid 14 times, with the holiday and Christmas subsidies, so each payment is €1,361.22 net from €1,785.71 gross.

Above €80,000 of taxable income a solidarity surcharge of 2.5% is added, rising to 5% above €250,000. The Azores and Madeira apply lower regional rates; this calculator uses the mainland table.

Segurança Social at 11%

Employees pay 11% of all salary, with no ceiling. The employer adds 23.75% on top, which does not touch your pay.

The contribution is deducted before IRS only indirectly: it counts towards the specific deduction, which is €4,587.09 in 2026 (8.54 times the social support index of €537.13). Once your contributions pass that figure, at about €41,700.82 of gross, the deduction follows them.

On €45,000 the contribution is €4,950 and IRS is €9,517.60, leaving €30,532.40.

IRS Jovem for Workers up to 35

IRS Jovem exempts part of the salary of a worker aged 35 or under for the first ten years of earned income, with a cap of €29,542.15 a year (55 times the index).

Year of work incomeShare exemptNet on €25,000

Years 2 to 475%€22,219.52
Years 5 to 750%€21,165.35
Years 8 to 1025%€20,111.19

The exempt part still counts when the rate is chosen, so the rest of the salary is taxed at the average rate of the full amount. Social Security is due on the whole salary either way, which is why the first year net is €22,250 and not the full gross.

Holiday and Christmas Subsidies

By law the year has 14 salary payments: twelve months plus the subsídio de férias, usually paid before the summer holidays, and the subsídio de Natal in November or December. Some employers spread the two extras across the twelve months instead (duodécimos).

Either way the annual tax is the same. Monthly withholding tables can make a subsidy month look different on the payslip, and the final IRS return the next spring settles the difference.

What Counts as Taxable Pay in Portugal

  • Taxed: base salary, both subsidies, overtime, bonuses and most allowances.
  • Exempt within limits: meal allowance up to the legal daily amount (higher on a meal card), and some travel allowances.
  • Lower the bill: dependants, health, education and housing expenses recorded on e-fatura, each with its own cap.

Assumptions Behind the Portugal Result

  • Single taxpayer resident on the mainland, one employer for the full year, no dependants.
  • The €250 general family deduction is assumed in full (15% of about €1,666.67 of invoiced spending).
  • The mínimo de existência is not applied, so gross pay under about €16,543.60 may owe less IRS than shown.
  • The result is the annual IRS, not the monthly retenção na fonte.
