The gross to net calculator Denmark turns a Danish salary into what lands in your NemKonto after AM-bidrag, municipal tax and state tax. It runs on the 2026 rules from skat.dk, including the tax reform that split the old top tax into three steps.

On DKK 600,000 a year, close to the national average, the average municipal tax rate leaves you with DKK 383,423.55 a year, or DKK 31,951.96 a month. Set your own municipal rate and church membership in the form to match your tax card (skattekort).

How Tax on a Danish Salary Is Worked Out

Danish payroll runs in a fixed order, and each step shrinks the base for the next:

  1. ATP, the statutory supplementary pension. A full-time monthly employee pays DKK 99 a month; the employer pays twice that.
  2. AM-bidrag of 8% comes off gross pay before any income tax. What is left is your personal income.
  3. Deductions lower the base for municipal and church tax only: the employment deduction (beskæftigelsesfradrag) of 12.75% of earnings up to DKK 63,300, and the jobfradrag of 4.5% above DKK 235,200, up to DKK 3,100.
  4. The personal allowance (personfradrag) of DKK 54,100 is tax free in both the municipal and the state calculation.

Municipal tax then applies to the remaining taxable income, and state tax applies to personal income.

Danish State Tax Brackets After the 2026 Reform

From 1 January 2026 the old 15% topskat is gone. In its place come three smaller steps on top of the bottom tax, all measured on personal income after AM-bidrag:

State taxApplies to personal incomeRate
Bottom tax (bundskat)above DKK 54,10012.01%
Middle tax (mellemskat)above DKK 641,2007.5%
Top tax (topskat)above DKK 777,9007.5%
Top top tax (toptopskat)above DKK 2,592,7005%

A tax ceiling (skatteloft) of 44.57% caps municipal tax, bottom tax and middle tax together. In a municipality above about 25.06% the middle tax rate is trimmed so the three never pass the ceiling. With the average municipal rate the highest combined rate on pay, including AM-bidrag, works out at roughly 60.5%.

Worked Example on 600,000 Kroner

  • ATP: 12 × DKK 99 = DKK 1,188
  • AM-bidrag: 8% × DKK 598,812 = DKK 47,904.96, leaving personal income of DKK 550,907.04
  • Deductions: employment deduction DKK 63,300 (capped) and jobfradrag DKK 3,100 (capped)
  • Municipal tax: (DKK 550,907.04 − DKK 66,400 − DKK 54,100) × 25.05% = DKK 107,816.96
  • Bottom tax: (DKK 550,907.04 − DKK 54,100) × 12.01% = DKK 59,666.53
  • Middle tax: none, since personal income is below DKK 641,200
  • Net pay: DKK 383,423.55 a year, DKK 31,951.96 a month

That is 36.1% of gross. A Folkekirke member pays another DKK 3,731.63 in church tax at the 0.867% average.

Municipal Tax and Church Tax by Kommune

Municipal tax is the largest single deduction on most Danish payslips. Each of the 98 municipalities sets its own rate each year. The 2026 average published by Skatteministeriet is 25.049%, which the calculator rounds to 25.05%.

Church tax (kirkeskat) is paid only by members of the Danish National Church. It is charged on the same base as municipal tax, at a parish rate that averages 0.867% for members.

What Is Taxed and What Is Not

  • AM-bidrag and income tax: salary, overtime, bonuses, commission and most fringe benefits such as a company car or free phone.
  • Before AM-bidrag: your own share of a labour market pension paid through the employer is not AM-income and not taxed now; it is taxed when paid out.
  • Tax free: a small staff gift within skat.dk's yearly limit, and some home and work related costs the employer reimburses at the official rates.

Interest on loans, union fees and commuting costs (befordringsfradrag) reduce municipal tax further but depend on your own situation, so the calculator leaves them out.

Monthly Pay and Holiday Pay

Most Danish employees are paid monthly. Your tax card spreads the personfradrag and deductions over the year, so the same net figure arrives each month: DKK 31,951.96 on DKK 50,000 gross a month.

Holiday pay, a holiday supplement or a bonus is taxed like salary. The month it is paid shows a higher gross and a higher tax line, but over the year the totals follow the same rules as this calculator.
