The gross to net calculator for Austria is a salary tool built around the Austrian 14 payment year. Enter the monthly gross that your contract states, and it returns the net pay for the twelve regular months, the net holiday and Christmas bonuses, and the total for the year after income tax (Lohnsteuer) and social insurance (Sozialversicherung).

A salaried employee on €4,000 a month earns €56,000 gross over the year. Outside Vienna that leaves €2,724.79 in a normal month and €38,971.02 for the year. The figures match the Finance Ministry's own Brutto-Netto-Rechner for 2026 to the cent.

Net Salary on €4,000 a Month in Austria

This is the pay of a salaried worker in Graz, Linz or Salzburg on €4,000 a month, no children, no commuter allowance.

ItemRegular monthBonus month (average of the two)Year (14 payments)
Gross€4,000.00€4,000.00€56,000.00

Net pay€2,724.79€3,136.77€38,971.02

The 620 euro allowance makes the first bonus a little cheaper than the second, so the table shows their average. Both pay more net than a normal month, because they carry lower social insurance and a flat 6% tax. Spread evenly, the year averages €3,247.59 a month, or €2,783.64 per payment.

How the 13th and 14th Salary Are Taxed

Most Austrian collective agreements pay a holiday bonus in summer and a Christmas bonus in winter, each worth one month's salary. Tax law treats them as special payments (sonstige Bezüge):

  • the first €620 a year is tax free;
  • the next €24,380 is taxed at a flat 6%, then 27% and 35.75% on larger sums;
  • no tax at all when the year's bonus sixth stays under €2,615;
  • social insurance is 17.07% instead of 18.07%, as the chamber levy and housing contribution do not apply.

On €4,000 the two bonuses together cost €360.86 in tax. Taxed like regular pay they would cost several times that.

Austrian Income Tax Brackets for 2026

The 2026 brackets were raised by two thirds of inflation, 1.733%. They apply to the twelve regular salaries, after social insurance and the €132 work expense allowance.

over €1,000,00055%

The employee transport credit (Verkehrsabsetzbetrag) of €496 then comes off the tax. On €4,000 a month the regular salaries are taxed at a 40% top rate, yet the average across the year is 12.5%.

Social Insurance for Employees in 2026

Salaried staff (Angestellte) pay 18.07% of gross pay up to €6,930 a month:

PartEmployee rate
Pension insurance10.25%
Health insurance3.87%
Unemployment insurance2.95%
Chamber of Labour levy0.5%
Housing contribution (Vienna 0.75%)0.5%

Lower earners pay less unemployment insurance: nothing up to €2,225 a month, 1% up to €2,427 and 2% up to €2,630. On €1,800 the monthly charge is €272.16, only 15.1%. Above the ceiling the charge is fixed, so on €9,000 it stays at €1,252.25. Jobs paying €551.10 a month or less are marginal and carry no employee contribution.

Gross to Net in Vienna

Since January 2026 Vienna charges a higher housing contribution (Wohnbauförderungsbeitrag): 1.5% split equally, so the employee pays 0.75% instead of 0.5%. Employee social insurance in Vienna is therefore 18.32%.

On €4,000 a month that means €732.80 of social insurance and €2,718.79 net in a regular month, against €2,724.79 in the other states. Over the year a Vienna employee keeps €38,899.02. The bonuses are not affected, because the contribution is not charged on them. Select Vienna in the calculator to apply it.

What Is Taxed and What Is Not

  • Taxed at the normal rates: the twelve regular salaries, overtime base pay and most allowances.
  • Taxed at the 6% rate: holiday and Christmas bonuses within the annual sixth.
  • Partly tax free: some overtime supplements, the commuter allowance and the family bonus (Familienbonus Plus), which you enter on your payslip form.
  • Refunds: low earners can get part of their social insurance back through the annual employee assessment, which this calculator does not include.

Assumptions and Limits

  • A salaried employee with 14 equal payments and no children; family bonus and single earner credits are not applied.
  • No commuter allowance, no tax free supplements and no company pension.
  • The extra transport credit for low incomes and the social insurance refund come only with the annual return, so they are left out.
  • Bonus amounts above the 6% band use the 27% and 35.75% steps; very large bonuses over €83,333 are taxed at 50% here.
