Child allowances in Soli and church tax, the 2+ child care discount, Saxony care rates, private health cover and midijob rules are left out.

This gross to net calculator for Germany is a brutto netto tool that follows the official 2026 payroll formula of the Federal Ministry of Finance. It takes your gross salary, applies wage tax (Lohnsteuer), the solidarity surcharge, optional church tax and the four employee social insurance contributions, and shows the net figure your employer pays out.

On the median full-time salary of €54,000 a year, a single employee in tax class I with no children keeps €34,453.00. That is €2,871.08 a month from €4,500.00 gross. Roughly 21.8% goes to social insurance and 14.4% to tax.

Wage tax is worked out on €41,853.00, not on the full salary. Payroll first takes off the €1,230 employee allowance, the €36 special expenses allowance and a pension and health allowance (Vorsorgepauschale) of €10,881.00. The solidarity surcharge is zero because the wage tax stays under the €20,350 threshold.

How the 2026 Lohnsteuer Is Calculated

Germany taxes income on a smooth curve rather than steps. Section 32a of the Income Tax Act sets five zones for 2026:

Taxable incomeTax formula
up to €12,348no tax (basic allowance)
€12,349 to €17,799(914.51 × y + 1,400) × y
€17,800 to €69,878(173.10 × z + 2,397) × z + 1,034.87
€69,879 to €277,8250.42 × x − 11,135.63
from €277,8260.45 × x − 19,470.38

y = (income − 12,348) / 10,000; z = (income − 17,799) / 10,000

The marginal rate starts at 14% just above the basic allowance and climbs to 42%. The top 45% rate only applies to very high incomes. The solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag) of 5.5% is charged only when annual wage tax passes €20,350, which in class I happens from about €92,400 of salary. At €120,000 it comes to €1,337.91.

New for 2026: the payroll allowance now includes a share for unemployment insurance, as long as it fits under a combined €1,900 cap with health and care.

Social Insurance Contributions in 2026

Four contributions come out of every German salary. The employer pays a matching share on top, which never shows on your payslip.

ContributionEmployee rateCharged up to (per year)On €54,000
Pension insurance (Rentenversicherung)9.3%€101,400€5,022.00
Unemployment insurance1.3%€101,400€702.00
Health insurance (Krankenversicherung)7.3% + 1.45%€69,750€4,725.00
Long-term care (Pflegeversicherung)1.8% or 2.4%€69,750€1,296.00

Health insurance is 7.3% plus half of your fund's extra contribution; the calculator uses the 2026 average of 2.9%. Employees aged 23 or older without children pay 0.6% more for care. With children the same salary keeps €34,673.00 a year instead of €34,453.00.

Above the ceilings nothing more is charged, which is why the share of social insurance falls on high pay. At €150,000 it is 12.4% of gross.

Tax Classes I to VI Compared

Your tax class (Steuerklasse) only changes how much wage tax is withheld each month. The final tax for the year is settled on the return. Here is €54,000 in each class:

Tax classWho it is forWage tax per yearNet per month
Isingle€7,802.00€2,871.08
IIsingle parent€6,557.00€3,001.83
IIImarried, higher earner€3,602.00€3,221.08
IVmarried, similar pay€7,802.00€2,871.08
Vmarried, lower earner€13,351.00€2,408.67
VIsecond job€13,883.00€2,364.33

Class III applies the splitting tariff, so the wage tax is halved and then doubled. The III and V pairing suits couples where one partner earns much more; with similar pay, IV and IV comes closer to the final tax. Class II adds the €4,260 single parent allowance and is shown with the child rate for care insurance.

Between €30,000 and €120,000 the deduction share rises from 29.2% to 42.9%. Most of that growth is wage tax; social insurance is capped.

Church Tax and Pay in Berlin or Munich

Members of a registered church pay church tax (Kirchensteuer) as a percentage of their wage tax, not of their salary. The rate is 8% in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% in every other state, including Berlin, Hamburg and Hesse.

  • Berlin, 9%: €702.18 a year on €54,000, so net falls to €2,812.57 a month.
  • Munich, 8%: €624.16 a year, net €2,819.07 a month.
  • No church membership: €2,871.08 a month.

Outside church tax, wage tax and social insurance are the same in every federal state, so the calculator works for Berlin, Frankfurt or Leipzig alike.

What Counts as Taxable Pay

  • Taxed: base salary, overtime pay, bonuses, Christmas and holiday money, and company car benefits.
  • Tax free within limits: employer pension contributions, some meal vouchers, job tickets and night or Sunday supplements.
  • Monthly pay: payroll divides the annual result by 12. A 13th salary is taxed as a one off payment, so the month it arrives shows a larger tax line, but the annual total matches this calculator.
  • Refunds: work costs above the €1,230 allowance, such as commuting, are claimed on the tax return.

Assumptions and Limits

  • Statutory health and care insurance with the average extra health contribution of 2.9%; your fund may charge more or less.
  • Children switch off the childless care surcharge only. Child allowances in Soli and church tax and the care discount for two or more children are not applied.
  • Saxony's different care split, private health insurance, minijobs and the midijob range are not modelled.
  • Church tax uses the plain 8% or 9% rate without state caps.
