Croatia 2026 (Porezna uprava, NN 150/2025): pension 15% I pillar and 5% II pillar up to 11,958 € a month, with the I pillar relief below 1,300 €; personal allowance 600 € a month plus children; income tax at the chosen local rates, higher rate above 5,000 € a month of taxable income; youth relief on the lower rate tax. Same pay every month.

The gross to net calculator Croatia turns bruto plaća into neto plaća for 2026 with the two pension pillars, the personal allowance and the income tax rates that your city or municipality sets.

On €2,000 a month in Zagreb, near the national average of €1,993, net pay is €1,370 a month. The same salary nets €1,400 in a place without its own rate decision.

Pension Contributions: First and Second Pillar

Employees pay 20% of gross into pension insurance: 15% to the first pillar (MIO I, generational solidarity) and 5% to the second pillar (MIO II, individual savings). Health insurance is paid by the employer on top of gross and does not affect net pay.

Contributions stop at the maximum base of €11,958 a month (€143,496 a year), six times the average wage of €1,993.

First Pillar Relief for Lower Pay

For monthly gross up to €1,300, the base for the first pillar is reduced:

  • by €300 for gross up to €700;
  • by 0.5 × (€1,300 − gross) from €700.01 to €1,300.

On €1,000 a month the reduction is €150, so the first pillar costs €127.50 instead of €150. The second pillar is still paid on the full gross, and your pension rights are counted on the unreduced base.

Personal Allowance and Children

The basic personal allowance (osobni odbitak) is €600 a month. Each dependent child raises it by a coefficient of the basic amount:

ChildCoefficientExtra allowance a month
First child0.5€300
Second child0.7€420
Third child1€600
Fourth child1.4€840

With two children on €2,000 in Zagreb, the allowance is €1,320 and the monthly tax falls from €230 to €64.40.

Local Income Tax Rates in 2026

Croatia abolished the city surtax (prirez) in 2024. Instead, each local unit sets two rates within legal limits: a lower rate on taxable income up to €5,000 a month (€60,000 a year) and a higher rate above it.

Municipality (općina)15% to 20%25% to 30%

Large town or county seat15% to 22%25% to 32%
City of Zagreb15% to 23%25% to 33%

Zagreb applies 23% and 33%, the calculator default. At the lowest rates allowed, €2,000 would net €1,450 a month. Check the Porezna uprava table for your own place.

Tax Relief for Young Workers

Employees up to 25 pay no tax on the part of income taxed at the lower rate, and those aged 26 to 30 pay half. On €2,000 a month in Zagreb that takes the tax from €230 to €0 or €115. Contributions are unchanged. The relief applies to salary from employment and is given through payroll, so it shows on each monthly payslip rather than waiting for the annual return.

Worked Example on 2,000 € in Zagreb

  • First pillar: €2,000 × 15% = €300; second pillar: × 5% = €100
  • Income after contributions: €1,600
  • Less personal allowance €600: taxable €1,000
  • Tax at 23%: €230
  • Net: €1,370 a month, €16,440 a year

At €8,000 a month the higher 33% rate applies to part of the base and net pay is €4,986.

Bonuses and extras

Holiday pay (regres), Christmas bonuses (božićnica) and other rewards are tax free only up to the yearly limits set by the Income Tax Rules. Any amount above those limits is added to that month's salary and taxed and insured like it. Meal and travel allowances follow their own limits too.

Assumptions and Sources for Croatia

  • Employee in both pension pillars, the same gross every month, one employer.
  • Monthly tax as on the payslip; the annual return can differ if income varied during the year.
  • No disability allowances, no dependants other than children, no returning emigrant relief.
