From gross salary to net in Belgium
A Belgian payslip deducts three things. Social security comes first, at 13.07% of gross for white-collar staff. Then the employer withholds tax on account (précompte professionnel, bedrijfsvoorheffing), designed to match the final income tax. Finally the special social security contribution is taken, a small extra amount set by a separate scale.
This page calculates the final yearly tax rather than the withholding tables, which is what the tax return settles in the end:
- Gross minus social security gives the net taxable pay before expenses.
- A flat 30% deduction for work expenses applies, capped at €6,070.
- The federal bands are applied, then the tax on the tax free amount is subtracted.
- The communal surcharge is a percentage of that tax.
Worked example: 49,000 euros a year
| Item | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | €4,083.33 | €49,000 |
| Social security (13.07%) | −€533.69 | −€6,404.30 |
| Work expenses deduction (not paid out) | €505.83 | €6,070 |
| Taxable income | €3,043.81 | €36,525.70 |
| Tax on the bands | €1,037.76 | €12,453.06 |
| Less tax on the tax free amount | −€240.62 | −€2,887.50 |
| Federal income tax | €797.13 | €9,565.56 |
| Communal surcharge at 7% | €55.80 | €669.59 |
| Special social security contribution | €39.06 | €468.67 |
Net pay is €49,000 minus social security, income tax, the surcharge and the special contribution: €31,891.87 a year, or €2,657.66 a month. That is 34.9% of gross in deductions, a typical share for Belgium at this level.
Federal tax bands and the tax free amount
| Taxable income, assessment year 2027 | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to €16,720 | 25% |
| €16,720 to €29,510 | 40% |
| €29,510 to €51,070 | 45% |
| Over €51,070 | 50% |
Everyone has a tax free amount (belastingvrije som, quotité exemptée) of €11,550 for 2026 income. Belgium does not take it off income. Instead it works out the tax on that amount at the lowest rate, €2,887.50, and deducts it from the tax due. The reform law of 15 July 2026 raises this amount step by step until 2030, so later years will bring higher net pay at the same gross.
The 50% band starts at a taxable income of €51,070, which a gross salary reaches at roughly €65,731.
Social security and the special contribution
The employee rate of 13.07% applies to all gross pay with no ceiling. Blue-collar workers pay it on 108% of gross, a rule this page leaves out. Low earners pay less through the social work bonus (werkbonus), which this calculator does not model.
The special social security contribution depends on the quarter's pay. For a single person it is nil up to €1,945.38 a month and reaches its ceiling of €731.28 a year once monthly pay passes €6,038.82. In the example it is €468.67. Couples are assessed on household income when the tax return is processed, so the final figure can differ from what was withheld.
Communal surcharge by municipality
Each commune sets its own surcharge (aanvullende gemeentebelasting) on federal income tax, from 0% up to around 9%. Your last tax assessment shows the rate. It is applied to the tax, not to income, so its effect is modest.
| Communal rate | Surcharge per year | Net per month |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | €0 | €2,713.46 |
| 7% (default) | €669.59 | €2,657.66 |
| 9% | €860.90 | €2,641.71 |
Between the lowest and highest common rates the gap on €49,000 is €71.74 a month.

| €120,000 | €15,684 | €42,477.40 | €731.28 | €5,092.28 | 49.1% |

Holiday pay, 13th month and what is taxed
- Taxed like salary: monthly pay, the 13th month (eindejaarspremie) paid under most joint committee agreements, double holiday pay and bonuses. Enter them in the yearly gross to include them; one-off payments are withheld at separate rates but end up in the same yearly tax.
- Tax free within limits: employer meal vouchers, eco vouchers and set expense allowances.
- Taxed on a lump sum: the private use of a company car, which adds a benefit in kind.
- Outside this calculator: group insurance premiums paid by the employer, and the employer's own social security contributions on top of gross.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is 49,000 euros gross in net pay in Belgium?
About €2,657.66 a month or €31,892 a year in 2026, single, with a 7% communal surcharge.
What is the précompte professionnel?
The income tax your employer withholds from each payslip, called bedrijfsvoorheffing in Dutch. It is an advance on the final tax worked out after your return.
What is the tax free amount for 2026 income?
€11,550 for a single person. It is converted into a tax reduction at the 25% rate, worth €2,887.50.
Does the 13th month change my net salary?
Yes, it adds to yearly gross and is taxed. Put your full yearly gross, including the 13th month and double holiday pay, in the yearly field to see the true average.
Which communal surcharge should I use?
Use the rate of the municipality where you lived on 1 January of the assessment year. Your tax assessment shows it; 7% is the default here.
Why is Belgian take home pay lower than in the Netherlands?
Belgium combines higher social security with a 50% band from €51,070 of taxable income. Compare with the Netherlands Gross to Net Calculator for the same gross.
Does this include the work bonus?
No. The work bonus reduces social security and income tax for low monthly pay, so net pay at low salaries will be somewhat higher than shown.
