Class 1 SSC for an employee aged 18 or over born from 1962: 10% of the basic weekly wage, at least €22.94 and at most €55.93 a week, over 52 weeks. Parent and child rates assume an EU or EEA national. Statutory bonuses and fringe benefits not included.

The gross to net calculator Malta works out what an employee in Malta or Gozo keeps after income tax and Class 1 social security. Tax follows the rates for basis year 2026, which add wider zero rate bands for married couples and parents with children.

A single employee on €33,000 a year keeps €25,241.64, which is €2,103.47 a month or €485.42 a week. Married couples taxed jointly on the same income keep €26,391.64.

Malta Take Home Pay on €33,000

  1. Income tax, single rates: €33,000 × 25% − €3,400 = €4,850.
  2. Weekly wage: €33,000 ÷ 52 = €634.62, above the €559.31 threshold, so SSC is the weekly maximum of €55.93.
  3. SSC for the year: €55.93 × 52 = €2,908.36.

Malta Tax Rates for Basis Year 2026

Malta publishes its rates as a rate times income, less a fixed amount. That gives the same tax as working through the bands one by one.

Parent and Married Rates With Children

From basis year 2026 the Income Tax Act gives bigger tax free bands to couples and parents who keep children under 18 (or under 23 in full-time education). The parent rates assume you or your spouse is an EU or EEA national or a long-term resident.

FSS Withholding, Monthly and Weekly Pay

Employers deduct tax through the Final Settlement System (FSS) using tax tables that match the yearly rates, so twelve monthly or 52 weekly deductions add up to the annual figure when pay is steady.

Malta also has statutory bonuses paid in June and December and a weekly allowance paid four times a year. Include them in the gross you enter; the calculator treats that figure as the whole year.

Taxable and Tax Free Pay in Malta

  • Taxed: salary, statutory bonuses, overtime, commission and fringe benefits such as a company car.
  • No relief for contributions: Class 1 social security does not reduce taxable income, unlike in most of Europe.

Assumptions for the Malta Result

  • Resident employee, 18 or over, born from 1962, one employer for the full year.
  • Parent rates assume the custody and nationality conditions in the Income Tax Act are met.
  • The 35% parent rate uses the subtraction printed in the Act (€10,270); the bands meet at €10,275, so results above €60,000 may differ by €5.
