| Line on the pay stub | Monthly | Annual |

| Federal income tax | −$468.33 | −$5,620 |

| Medicare | −$78.54 | −$942.50 |

Three lines, all federal:
- Federal income tax of $5,620, on $48,900 of taxable income after the $16,100 standard deduction.
- Social Security at 6.2%: $4,030.
- Medicare at 1.45%: $942.50.
Why Florida Has No State Income Tax
The Florida Constitution bars a personal income tax on individuals. Changing that would take a constitutional amendment approved by voters.
The state raises money through sales tax, property tax, and tourism and corporate taxes instead. Those costs are real, but they do not appear on a pay stub, so a gross to net calculation leaves them out.
What Still Comes Out of a Florida Paycheck
- Federal income tax, using the IRS 2026 brackets and your W-4.
- Social Security at 6.2% up to $184,500 of wages.
- Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 for a single filer.
- Your own choices: 401(k) deferrals, health insurance premiums, HSA and FSA money, union dues and wage garnishments.
Florida has no state disability insurance, no paid family leave premium and no city wage tax. Reemployment (unemployment) tax is paid by employers only.

Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Medicare is included in the net figures.
A married couple filing jointly on $120,000 keeps $100,780: the joint standard deduction of $32,200 and wider brackets lower the federal bill to $10,040.

Bonuses are taxed by the IRS at a flat 22% withholding rate in most cases. The Bonus Tax Calculator shows the effect on one check.
Florida Compared With Taxed States
Moving from a state with income tax raises net pay even at the same salary. On $55,000 a single filer in Florida keeps $46,372.50, while in neighbouring Georgia the same salary leaves $44,376.50 after $1,996 of Georgia tax.
Price levels differ too. The Cost of Living Calculator adjusts a salary for rent and prices between states.
Florida Take Home Pay for Married Couples
Because there is no state return, filing status in Florida changes only the federal line. A couple filing jointly gets a $32,200 standard deduction and brackets twice as wide as a single filer's.
| Gross salary | Federal tax | Net per year | Net per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| $60,000 | $2,840 | $52,570 | $4,380.83 |
| $90,000 | $6,440 | $76,675 | $6,389.58 |
| $120,000 | $10,040 | $100,780 | $8,398.33 |
| $180,000 | $21,940 | $144,290 | $12,024.17 |
Social Security and Medicare are charged per worker and do not depend on how a couple files. When both spouses work, each paycheck shows FICA on that person's own wages.
Self Employed in Florida
Freelancers and sole traders in Florida also skip state income tax, but they pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare as self employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, with the Social Security part stopping at the $184,500 wage base.
Half of that self employment tax is deductible for federal income tax. The Self Employment Tax Calculator works through the numbers for a Florida contractor, and quarterly estimated payments replace the withholding an employer would make.
Assumptions, Limits and Sources
- Federal tax uses the standard deduction and no credits; the child tax credit and other credits would raise net pay.
- Pre-tax deductions are left at zero.
- Remote workers employed by a company in another state may still owe that state's tax on Florida work in a few cases; this calculator assumes Florida work for a Florida employer.
