How the New York State Calculation Works
New York starts from federal adjusted gross income, so for a plain salary the state figure begins at your gross wages.
NY taxable income = wages − $8,000 (single) or $16,050 (married jointly)
The rate schedule then applies band by band. On top of the income tax, two employee contributions come out of every paycheck: 0.5% of wages for disability benefits, capped at 60 cents a week, and 0.432% for Paid Family Leave, capped at $411.91 a year.
New York State Tax Rates 2026
The 2026 schedule from Tax Law section 601, after the budget cut the 4%, 4.5%, 5.25%, 5.5% and 6% rates:
| Rate | Single | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 3.9% | $0 to $8,500 | $0 to $17,150 |
| 4.4% | $8,500 to $11,700 | $17,150 to $23,600 |
| 5.15% | $11,700 to $13,900 | $23,600 to $27,900 |
| 5.4% | $13,900 to $80,650 | $27,900 to $161,550 |
| 5.9% | $80,650 to $215,400 | $161,550 to $323,200 |
| 6.85% | $215,400 to $1,077,550 | $323,200 to $2,155,350 |
| 9.65% | $1,077,550 to $5,000,000 | $2,155,350 to $5,000,000 |
| 10.3% | $5,000,000 to $25,000,000 | $5,000,000 to $25,000,000 |
| 10.9% | Over $25,000,000 | Over $25,000,000 |
Most full time workers sit in the 5.4% band, which runs to $80,650 of taxable income for a single filer and $161,550 for a couple. The three top rates apply only to incomes in the millions.
Worked Example: $61,000 in Upstate New York
A single employee on $61,000, living outside New York City:
| Line | Per year | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $61,000 | $5,083.33 |
| Federal income tax | $5,140 | $428.33 |
| Social Security | $3,782 | $315.17 |
| Medicare | $884.50 | $73.71 |
| New York State income tax | $2,697 | $224.75 |
| NY disability insurance (SDI) | $31.20 | $2.60 |
| NY Paid Family Leave | $263.52 | $21.96 |
| Net pay | $48,201.78 | $4,016.82 |
Taxable income for the state is $61,000 − $8,000 = $53,000. The first $8,500 costs 3.9%, the next slices 4.4% and 5.15%, and the rest 5.4%, for $2,697 in all. The disability contribution has already hit its $31.20 yearly cap.
NY SDI and Paid Family Leave Deductions
| Program | Employee rate | Yearly cap | At $61,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disability benefits (SDI) | 0.5% | $31.20 (60 cents a week) | $31.20 |
| Paid Family Leave (PFL) | 0.432% | $411.91 | $263.52 |
The PFL cap is reached at about $95,350 of pay, the statewide average wage that the Department of Financial Services uses for 2026. The 2026 rate rose from 0.388% the year before. An employer may choose to pay the SDI share for you, and then your net pay is a little higher.
NYS Take Home Pay by Salary
Single filer, no city tax, figures from the calculator:
| Salary | New York State income tax | NY Paid Family Leave | Net per year | Net per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $32,000 | $1,131 | $138.24 | $26,591.56 | $2,215.96 |
| $45,000 | $1,833 | $194.40 | $36,278.90 | $3,023.24 |
| $61,000 | $2,697 | $263.52 | $48,201.78 | $4,016.82 |
| $78,000 | $3,615 | $336.96 | $59,719.84 | $4,976.65 |
| $95,000 | $4,564.75 | $410.40 | $70,656.15 | $5,888.01 |
The table stops below $107,650 on purpose. Above that income New York adds a supplemental tax that slowly takes back the benefit of the lower bands, and this calculator does not model it, so higher salaries would show a state tax that is a little low.
Joint Returns in New York State
A married couple with one earner on $61,000 keeps $50,983.98. Their state tax falls to $2,094.80 because the standard deduction doubles to $16,050 and every band is twice as wide. SDI and PFL do not change, since they depend on the worker's wages only.
New York Paycheck by Pay Frequency
| Schedule | Gross each pay | Net each pay |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly, 52 pays | $1,173.08 | $926.96 |
| Every two weeks, 26 pays | $2,346.15 | $1,853.91 |
| Twice a month, 24 pays | $2,541.67 | $2,008.41 |
| Monthly, 12 pays | $5,083.33 | $4,016.82 |
New York employers withhold with the NYS-50-T tables and your IT-2104. The tables are built to match the yearly tax, so the year total should come close to the net pay shown above.
Income New York Taxes and Income It Does Not
- Taxed: wages, bonuses, commissions, tips and taxable fringe benefits.
- Lowered by: traditional 401(k) deferrals, which reduce federal and New York wages alike.
- Not in this figure: Yonkers resident surcharge, the New York City income tax, and the MCTMT that applies to self employed people in the commuter district.
- Commuters: a New Jersey or Connecticut resident who works in New York pays New York tax on those wages. See the New Jersey Gross to Net Calculator for the home state side.
What This NYS Calculator Assumes
